Yumnah Syed became a member of the Live From 205 news team after auditioning in her freshman year. Her passion for journalism began at the age of 12 when she began writing for her school newspaper at Ridgecrest Intermediate. From then, her enthusiasm only grew. After making it on to both the Live From 205 and The Point staff freshman year, Yumnah decided she would much rather be a part of 205. She was the only incoming general assignment reporter when she began during her sophomore year, and went on to become Lead Reporter her junior and senior years. Yumnah joined 205 hoping to sharpen her journalism skills and become a better story teller. With each story she did, it was clear that Yumnah was learning invaluable skills from her experience as a member of the program. She loved every part of 205, from going out and getting the story, working hard to meet a deadline, to just hanging out in the studio. The members of 205 quickly became family to her, and she will forever be grateful for their presence in her life. It's hard to pick just one favourite story, but Yumnah especially loved those stories that got the rest of the PVHS community involved ? such as the story on the schools janitor Shawn, and his efforts to help the people of his village in his native Vietnam; or the story on Lara, a former 205 member and her volunteer work in South Africa. Yumnah feels the best part of being in 205 was "knowing you have the power to make a difference through your stories." She helped Shawn, the janitor she did a story on, raise money to send back to Vietnam through a fundraiser she ran, and helped Lara collect soccer cleats for the women and girls in the village where she was working; all through doing stories and getting the students of PV High involved. One of the most memorable experiences and greatest honors of Yumnah's 205 career was presenting at the 2008 STN Closing Ceremonies in front of over 3000 people.
Yumnah plans to attend El Camino College as a Communications major, and hopes to transfer to UCLA or USC by fall 2010. She is still considering all her options and is not sure if she will pursue a career in journalism just yet. She may end up going into PR, but is also considering going to law school, emphasizing in human rights law. An avid feminist and human rights activist, law school might just be her way to make the world a better place. Now that her Live From 205 career is over, Yumnah would like to thank Mr. Vela and the alums, including her older brother Salman, for being such a huge inspiration and helping her find her way. A huge thanks and much love to the entire Live From 205 family, for being such a big part of her life and such great friends. 205 was the best experience of her entire life.
To the future of 205 for now and years to come, Yumnah says "good luck, don't let the stress of a situation ever let you forget who you are, work hard to give PV the high standard and quality they expect, and don't forget to have fun!"
