"Catherine Cheney began her Live From 205 career as a freshman, in the
program's first year of existence. She served as set designer and
understudy, and it was this experience that sparked her interest in
television and broadcast journalism. She eventually gained more
experience and leadership, anchoring the program for three years and
serving as Lead Anchor and Assistant News Director her senior year.
Catherine has loved delivering the news to PV High, writing stories,
interviewing people throughout the community, and editing news
packages for the broadcast. Her favorite journalistic experience was a
story on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and its impact on high
school students Louisiana. Catherine organized a campaign to raise
more than $4000 for students at East Ascension High School, and she
and photographer Julia Ersan flew to New Orleans to interview students
and faculty about the devastation of the storm. Catherine received the
Free Spirit Award in March 2006, a $50,000 college scholarship awarded
by USA Today to the top two high school journalists in the United
States. She was one of ten students nationwide to win a National
Television Academy scholarship and one of five regional students
selected for the COX Communications Scholarship. She also received a
Student Emmy from the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Academy of
Television Arts and Sciences for her story on the United in Memory
Quilt. Catherine is now a student at Yale University, and plans on
majoring in Political Science and Ethics, Politics, and Economics. She
will continue to pursue her passion for broadcast at YTV, Yale's
student-run television station, and someday hopes to have a career in
television news or a related field. Catherine would like to thank Mr.
Vela, Mr. Bowles, the Live From 205 parents, and the PVHS Booster Club
for their support of the program. Thank you to the amazing 205 family,
past and present, for the hard work and unforgettable memories. She
wishes good luck to this year's group, and will be watching from
Yale!"
